Restorative practices is about helping people have the "right conversation" so they can work through conflict and build relationships, says restorative practices pioneer Terry O'Connell, director of Real Justice Australia (iirp.edu/au).

In the first part of this short video, he talks about his work with young students who learn in school how to frame that conversation, even when they go home and have problems with their friends.

In the second part of the video, Terry discusses his work with parents in indigenous communities in the northern part of Australia. Terry worked with Bjorn Christie-Johnson, CEO of Boarding Australia, an organization that provides support for boarding schools across the country, through the Parents & Community Engagement (PaCE) Project. During recent visits to the remote communities he asked parents, "What would the right conversation look like?" They said, "We know what the wrong conversation looks like." That's a starting point.
