Overview
This leadership activity helps to identify how the Engagement Window can be applied to interpersonal relationships, especially when there is conflict in the workplace. This exercise can be adapted to use with teachers thinking about how they respond to common student issues.
Facilitator Instructions
- Create a list of scenarios that could lead to conflict in the workplace (or classroom). Do this ahead of time or brainstorm a list in the moment with the participant group. Examples might include missed deadlines, miscommunication, and responsibility overload (or social exclusion, identity insensitivity, and sportsmanship disagreements).
- Choose one of the scenarios. Ask the participants to move to the quadrant that describes their traditional default reaction to this type of situation as a leader (or teacher).
- Ask those in each quadrant to discuss why they landed there. Specifically:
- What might you be feeling or thinking in the moment that tends to push you toward that quadrant?
- What emotions or responses from your staff (or students) would likely result from your operating out of that default quadrant?
- If not already there, how can we shift toward the WITH for that scenario?
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 with more scenarios, if time allows.
- Debrief with the large group: What struck you about that activity? Or what did you realize or learn from that reflection?
