The IIRP offers a series of trainings that teach people how to provide instruction in the core elements of restorative practices. By sharing licensed materials and proven instructional techniques with skilled individuals, we advance restorative practices and encourage the development of local training capacity in schools, organizations and communities around the globe.

While anyone who has attended the prerequisite professional development may attend the Training of Trainers, alumni of the Graduate School, both degree and certificate recipients, are eligible to do so at no cost.

Training of Trainers

These trainings present methods to teach underlying concepts as well as  provide “how-to” instruction in a manner that has been developed and tested with a variety of adult learners.

The Training of Trainer model is participatory in nature and includes lectures, videos, demonstrations, discussions, interactive circles and role-plays. Our core training licenses are modular to ensure the quality of the educational experience because our events are building blocks in a comprehensive educational framework.

Training of Trainers: 2-Day Facilitating Restorative Conferences (3 days)

Experienced practitioners learn how to facilitate the "Two-Day Facilitating Restorative Conferences" professional development days. Once trained, participants will be licensed trainers and able to provide this offering within their agency or limited geographical area.

Training of Trainers: Introduction to Restorative Practices and Using Circles Effectively (3 days)

Experienced practitioners learn how to facilitate the "Introduction to Restorative Practices" and "Using Circles Effectively" professional development days. Once trained, participants will be licensed trainers and able to provide these offerings within their agency or limited geographical area.

Whole-School Change Core Training TOT (4 days) 

The IIRP conducts a four-day "Whole-School Change Core Training" only for schools enrolled in the IIRPʼs two-year Whole-School Change program. This training and implementation program in comprehensive to engage all the professional and nonprofessional staff within the school to implement the “11 essential elements of restorative practices.” The program provides an effective and sustainable approach to improving school climate and reducing misbehavior, violence, crime and bullying in elementary and secondary schools.

The program includes four whole-day trainings: “Introduction to Restorative Practices,” “Using Circles Effectively," a one-day version of “Facilitating Restorative Conferences” and “Family Engagement and Empowerment.”

After delivering these four days of core training, the Whole-School Change program provides a four-day “Training of Trainers”  so that knowledgeable trainees may become licensed trainers, learning to offer the four core training days for new staff in the coming years.

Expectations

To ensure training quality and fidelity, IIRP expects trainers to meticulously comply with their licensing agreements:

  • Trainers must use the training scripts, digital presentations, videos, role-plays and prescribed activities that are provided for each core training.

  • Trainers must offer IIRP trainings in their prescribed sequence or configuration and must provide them as whole-day trainings.

  • Any other restorative practices trainings offered, whether IIRP non-core trainings or other, should only be offered after people have had the IIRP core trainings.

  • Trainers who provide other kinds of trainings must clearly identify in advance when they are not IIRP trainings.

  • Trainers must buy and provide each trainee with a copy of the paperback book related to each IIRP core training.
    1. As a nonprofit organization, IIRP relies on book sales to help fund its activities.
    2. The IIRP books ensure that trainees have permanent access to a wealth of information related to each core training without the burden of taking notes.
  • Trainers must pay the modest annual licensing fee.
    1. The fee supports the distribution of updated training materials.
    2. It also funds trainer web conferences and other trainer support activities.
  • All training materials (scripts, digital presentations, videos, role-plays, etc.) are provided to licensed trainers only on a long-term loan basis.
    1. Trainers are expected to return the materials when they let their licenses lapse.
    2. IIRP wants to ensure that its materials are not being used by unauthorized trainers and that they are being kept up-to-date.
  • IIRP trainings must meticulously maintain their fidelity because they intersect with other IIRP trainings and courses.

  • Trainers must check with IIRP before agreeing to do IIRP trainings outside of their identified institution or geographic area so they do not infringe on the rights of other IIRP trainers.
