Special Act 45 Program for Pennsylvania School Administrators

“I am eternally grateful to IIRP for giving me the tools necessary to be an effective leader and an agent of change, but especially for enabling me to restore community in a previously disconnected school environment. Thanks to my studies at IIRP, I am now a high school principal.”
—from an article entitled “How Restorative Practices Made Me A High School Principal” By Thomas S. Fertal, Lancaster, Pennsylvania

The IIRP is offering a new professional development program for school administrators. The program is designed to meet Pennsylvania Act 45 requirements but is relevant to school administrators everywhere.

The core of the program is the four-day institute: Basic Restorative Processes, held Summer 2011 in Bethlehem and Doylestown, PA. School administrators will join teachers and other professionals studying restorative practices during the institute and will complete their program with eight hours of interactive online activity over the next three months.

During the online component, the IIRP will provide support for administrators in implementing restorative practices in their school environment, incorporating the practices into their own management style and encouraging their staff to develop the use of the practices. The online portion will include discussion with fellow administrators regarding restorative practices implementation progress, successes and challenges and submission of a final report.

The program fulfills 38 hours of Pennsylvania Act 45 requirements.

For more information about this opportunity, please contact John Bailie, IIRP director of continuing education, at 267-246-5891 or johnbailie@iirp.org.

“An absolutely transformative experience. Top-notch teachers, illuminating role-plays, multimedia lessons and fascinating conversations with community leaders from a variety of disciplines. It empowered me to go out in the world and create a place for restorative practices in my community.”
—Yael Shy, Student, Northeastern University School of Law, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

“This has been a powerful week. I am eager to bring these ideas back to our school. I’m beginning to believe that it might be possible to teach empathy. These processes codify a vision that comes to some innately, but that isn’t out of reach for others who aren’t there yet.”
—Gillian Mamon, Teacher, Samuel Powel Elementary School. Philadelphia, PA, USA

“Extremely relevant and if properly implemented in Jamaica would no doubt alleviate the stigma attached to our justice system and our education system. We would be served to embrace and practice this even in our lives!!!”
—Phillip Morris, Corporal Of Police, Jamaica Constabulary Force, Kingston, Jamaica

“The total immersion in the restorative practices and principles I found stimulating, and I believe I can take the knowledge back to the U.K. and really begin to make a difference to the lives of our children and families. The instructors were inspiring and dynamic.
—Sheila Forrester, Children’s Center Coordinator, Goodwin Development Trust, Hull, England, U.K.
